Colchester Get Your Rear in Gear 5K

A beautiful summer day – without rain! – welcomed nearly 300 participants to the second annual Colchester Get Your Rear in Gear 5K run and walk.

Local Event Director Daphne Hebert was thrilled at the over 30 percent increase in participation from last year’s event. “It shows we are really getting the word out and people want to help in our efforts to fight colorectal cancer.” Over $10,500 was raised to support colorectal cancer initiatives at this year’s event.

A large Team of over 30 participants from Fletcher Allen Hospital, representing colon and rectal surgery, gastroenterology and oncology, were appropriately enough named Bottoms Up. Their participation showed that the medical community is supporting this event. This year Team Pauly, which was honoring Paul Schnabel who lost his battle to colon cancer this past March at the age of 42, had 20 family and friends particpate.

During the post-race activities, a check for $1,000 was presented to the Cancer Patient Support Program (CPSP) from the proceeds of the 2008 Get Your Rear in Gear event.

CPSP is community based and depends solely on donations to provide psychological, nutritional and emergency fund support.  97% of the funds the CPSP receives go directly to patient services, such as individual counseling, support programs, and dietician services at no charge to the patient.

According to Kathleen MacBeth from CPSP, their emergency fund provides financial support to cancer patients for transportation, food, bills, utilities, and other household expenses. Currently they distribute $10,000.00 a month for their patients.

The Coalition is proud to contribute to CPSP and will continue to support other efforts in Vermont to raise awareness for colorectal cancer, assist with screening and offer support to those touched by this disease.
