March Is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

What Should I Do to Support Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month?

Today will not be the first time you that March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.  It also won't be the last.  Since my sister was diagnosed 10 years ago, I've been trying to find my "role" and "responsibility" with "awareness" this month.  As the president of the Colon Cancer Coalition, I should have the secret knowledge of what it means to support "awareness" of colorectal cancer this month, right?  Wrong...Read more.

Exercise Helps Prevent Colon Cancer
United Press International

February 13, 2009

ST. LOUIS -- U.S. researchers found that people who exercised  were 24 percent less likely to develop the disease than those who exercised the least.

By joining one of our races you will increase your exercise, potentially decrease your risk of colon cancer, all while increasing awareness of colon cancer. Here is information on one of our up coming events.

Raleigh, North Carolina - March 7th: This first time event has over 225 people already signed up to participate.  There are nearly 20 teams set up to participate, and our presenting Sponsor, Digestive HealthCare, is leading the way with 26 members with many more workers coming out to volunteer on race day.  A special thanks to survivor Susan Falco for her willingness to share her story for local press.

Get Your Rear in Gear Team Focus:
Lafayette Race Team "The "C" Word"

"The "C" Word" is participating in the Lafayette Get Your Rear in Gear 5K and was formed in honor of Monica Lyon, who is currently fighting colon cancer.  The team has 14 members made up of friends, family and co-workers who are enthusiastically supporting the efforts of team captain Michelle Fogelman, Monica's daughter.

The team name comes from the way Monica would talk about cancer.  She had a hard time saying it out loud, and would use the "C" word when referring to the cancer.  Monica has successfully made it through surgery and the first stages of chemo, all with a very positive attitude.

The team has a great t-shirt with the team name on the front and the following powerful words on the back, "Screening...it could mean Surviving, Now, does that make it worth it?"  They chose a bright sapphire blue colored shirt with black lettering...which should make their team easy to spot on race day. With their fundraising efforts in place and great inspiration from Monica, "The "C" Word" Team is on track for a great race day.
